What is Ondo Stocks?
Ondo Stocks is a tokenization platform designed to provide onchain exposure to publicly traded securities. The platform will enable investors outside the US to gain exposure to thousands of US publicly traded securities, including stocks and ETFs. By providing tokenized exposure to these assets, Ondo Stocks brings the transparency, efficiency, and accessibility enabled by blockchain technology to institutional-grade finance. Through its APIs and SDKs, the platform also empowers third-party developers to build innovative financial applications, making it a cornerstone for the next generation of financial services.
What are Ondo tokenized stocks?
Ondo tokenized stocks (when we say 'stocks' we are also referring to ETFs and other publicly traded securities, for convenience) are tokens issued by the Ondo Stocks platform. They are designed to give holders the same economic exposure as they would receive if they owned the underlying asset and invested dividends back into the stock (net of withholding tax). They are designated by the on suffix. For example, the stock ticker for Tesla is TSLA, therefore the corresponding Ondo tokenized stock is called TSLAon. You can think of the on suffix as standing for onchain or Ondo—whichever you prefer.
How do Ondo tokenized stocks address slippage, liquidity, and price dislocations?
Ondo tokenized stocks address these issues by enabling instant, low-cost minting/redemption and by inheriting liquidity from traditional markets. This allows arbitrageurs to align prices quickly and effectively, reducing token slippage and dislocations from day one.
When can I trade Ondo tokenized stocks?
Minting and redeeming directly from the Ondo Stocks platform is generally available 24 hours a day, five days a week (24/5), from Sunday 8:00:00 pm ET to Friday 7:59:00 pm ET.* Tokens can be traded peer-to-peer at any time 24/7. *Note that minting and redeeming of tokens may be temporarily be halted due to certain corporate actions (e.g. dividends, stock splits, etc.), market conditions (e.g. excessive volatility, transition to a new trading session, etc.), or system risk controls being triggered. You can track such halts at https://status.ondo.finance.
Are Ondo tokenized stocks transferrable and DeFi compatible?
Yes. All Ondo tokenized stocks are transferable outside the US across supported blockchains, subject to certain jurisdictional and other restrictions. They are designed to be usable in DeFi protocols that support them. For example, they could be used as collateral for lending or in perps protocols.
How do Ondo tokenized stocks track the price of the underlying securities?
Ondo tokenized stocks are designed to be total-return trackers of their underlying securities. This means they reflect both price movements and reinvested dividends and/or interest, giving users exposure to the economic performance of the real stock over time—not just the price appreciation.
When you hold an Ondo tokenized stock, you receive similar economic exposure to what you would get if you owned the actual underlying stock and invested its dividends (net of any applicable withholding taxes) into the stock. This ensures that the tokenized asset mirrors the total return of the real-world asset.
